Visits:  The Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society wants your adoption to be a success!  Getting to know each other is an important first step in building a family.  Most pets are available to go home with you within a day or two.  If you are considering adopting a dog from DPVHS, spouses, partners, children, and any other member of your household will be required to visit the potential dog with you.   If you currently have a dog at home, we require you to bring along him/her to have a "dog to dog" visit.  This will help ensure the dogs will be compatible.

Application Process:  After spending some time visiting, you have made your decision!  All adoptions begin with filling out an application to help us make the best possible match of pet with your family and lifestyle.  Please be ready to present a valid ID, such as your driver's license.  As moving/relocation is the primary reason that pets are relinquished to shelters, we do a landlord check on potential adopters to verify that pets are allowed in your rental situation.  If you are a tenant, please bring along with you a copy of your lease/rental agreement and/or your landlord's phone number.  If you own your own home please provide a mortgage statement, or something similar, as proof of ownership.  To ensure that all pets receive life-long care, we also call your current, or prior, veterinarian as a reference to help us learn more about you and your needs.

Time to go home!:  Now comes the moment you've been waiting for! You have filled out the adoption application, signed your adoption contract taking over responsibility for your new companion's care, paid the adoption fee (please see below), and have gone through all of the other necessary steps.  Although it may seem to take a while, it will certainly be well worth it when you can finally take your new companion home.  Take the time, prior to bringing your new pet home, to get the necessary supplies your pet will need- i.e. cat litter & litterbox, food, water & food bowls, etc.  The shelter staff are more than willing to provide you with a list if you are unsure.  If you have chosen a cat, please be sure to bring along a cat carrier.  PVHS will not allow cat to be taken out of the building without a proper carrier.  We do sell cardboard carriers which you can purchase for $10.  If you have chosen a dog, all dogs will be sent home with their very own Martingale collar, but please be certain to bring a leash with you.
